DEPOSITS AND CORROSION
IN LOW TEMPERATURE AREAS

Sulphur trioxide reacts with steam and forms sulphuric acid, which corrodes the boiler metal surfaces and causes deposits.

The condensation of sulphuric acid can occur directly onto the heat transfer surfaces in the low temperature areas, but also on soot particles, which will adhere to the surfaces resulting in a build-up of soot deposits and further corrosion. The condensation of sulphuric acid is dependent on the concentration of SO3 in the combustion gases, which in turn determines the acid dew-point. The higher concentration of SO3, the higher the acid dew-point at the same boiler conditions.

The acid dew-point and condensation rate of the sulphuric acid is reduced by reducing the amount of SO3. In a boiler or furnace a lower acid dew-point means that the temperature of the stack gases can be reduced without risk of acid corrosion and thus the fuel consumption can be reduced. In a diesel engine a lower acid dew-point means that the risk of corrosive wear of the diesel cylinder liner is reduced. Click for chart

BYCOSIN 4030 is a highly concentrated organo metallic additive for very heavy fuel oils with high vanadium content. The product, which is neutral and oil soluble, is especially efficient in preventing high temperature deposits caused by vanadium and low temperature corrosion. The active components in 4030 are an optimum blend of surface-active organo metallic combustion catalysts based on metals, which for instance the authorities consider harmless from an environmental point of view.
